Lots of things coming up in the next couple of months.

Candidates Debate If you're interested in what's happening politically in Wyoming County, you just may want to attend the debate between district attorney and judge candidates. It's being help on April 27, 2009 at the Tunkhannock Area High School Auditorium. For myself, I'm very interested in hearing what George Skumanick has to say about his widely publicized actions as well as hearing from the judge candidates.

Community Days are just around the corner! Ideas are being generated for activities. Want to be a vendor or provide talent for the event? Wyoming County District Attorney the Topic of International News

George Skumanick brings disgrace to Wyoming County with his over the top actions that have led to a law suit in Federal Court. This isn't just local news, it's international news. A United Kingdom reporter has an objective view of what's going on and has made some very insightful comments and asked questions.

Read the article that the UK reporter wrote about George Skumanick. I think it may give you a whole new perspective on what's going on and why it's not a good thing. That there is an agenda and it's not in the best interest of our community.

This reminds me of a true life movie that I watched on TV recently about how the football team was sexually harassing the cheerleading squad and how the school and the school board allowed it to go on, tried to buy the cheerleaders off and sweep it under the rug. Except for one cheerleader who persisted and eventually got the rest of the squad to testify, winning the case. The moral to the story, schools don't have the right to abuse the law and they are not a law unto themselves. The DA does not have the right to abuse the law and is not a law unto himself.

In this situation, we have not only a school district but also a DA who have abused their authortity. I wonder if a movie will be made of this, too? I don't think this is over by a long shot. We'll be hearing about it more because it will set precidents of what NOT to do, not to let religious zealots and moral crusaders ruin kids lives for their beliefs.

Rik Myslewski summed up her article US mums sue anti-sexting crusader, Birds bite back nicely with:

"Frankly, Mr. Skumanick, we don't care what makes you "sad." We care about the fair and rational application of the law, the ability of kids to make their own mistakes without paying draconian penalties, and the rights of parents to not have their children targeted by moral crusaders."

I say this to the kids and I say this to the parents of the kids that are sueing: GOOD FOR YOU!!!! I support you 100% for standing up and protecting your kids.

You're teaching them a valuable lesson, one they'll carry with them for the rest of their lives. It's not OK for people in authority to take unfair advantage, threaten or abuse the law. There are consequences for everyone and we all have to obey the laws of our country no matter who or what we are.

I sincerely hope the parents of the ALL the children stand up against this abuse of power.

THE GREAT PA CLEANUP

We're participating in the "THE GREAT PA CLEANUP" again this year.The date is Saturday April 25th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. We are looking for volunteers to help with the cleanup and also sponsors who can provide refreshments and/or monetary support for supplies needed.

Bags,gloves and orange vests are all provided. The cleanup will encompass all Laceyville borough streets along with Route 6 from east of town to the west.

This event is was a big success last year. We collected a huge amount of trash.We also rid the borough of discarded tires and car batteries, etc. This is a great way to help beautify northeast PA.

Hello everyone!

This is Cheryl Carnright, Carnright Design, webmaster of Laceyville.com & member of Laceyville Business Association.

I've been fortunate to have been asked by Ken Patton of LB Printery (Laceyville Business Association Member) to design all of Deborah Albert-Heise's campaign materials -- from web site to printed matter including yard signs & more.

Another thing: I thought I'd give a little valuable info for anyone that wants it about bad web site design and just searching for interesting sites.

Often, I visit a web site that gives awards to the "Worst Web Sites on the Internet." It's a good thing to look at because it's just as important to know what NOT to do as it is to know what to do.

So if you have a minute, check out this site www.webpagesthatsuck.com. It will give you some insight. Please, use them to compare to yours and if necessary, make changes to yours.

I've also been having a lot of fun with Stumble. Do you know what that is? It's a list of web sites that people recommend. You can choose your own categories that you're interested in. For myself, I've found some really useful info and sites...things I'm really interested in. Try Stumble Upon.

Well, that's my latest thoughts. If you want, please feel free to reply with a post to this posting. We really do want to hear from you.

We are proud to announce that two business members of the Laceyville Business Association collaborated and created an international award winning rack card / brochure design. The prestigious award was issued in Antwerp, Belgium and the design won first against 19,000 applicants.

Tunkhannock Business Group Reaps Prestigious Award for Brochure - 10/30/2008

“We’ve been wanting to get Tunkhannock on the map, but we didn’t consider a map in Belgium."— Rich Santee

The Tunkhannock Business and Professional Association (TBPA) has been notified that its promotional brochure is an international award winner.

The brochure, “Come Home to Tunkhannock,” received a first place Regional Award of Excellence in the 2008 International Best Brochure Competition. The contest is sponsored by the International Association of Professional Brochure Distributors.

The contest results were announced in Antwerp, Belgium, by Bill Deering, the organization’s president, at its annual meeting. The Tunkhannock brochure was entered in the contest by Pennsylvania on Display, a division of Getaways on Display.

From a field of nearly 19,000 brochures, the Tunkhannock entry was among a list of 63 finalists. The entries were evaluated through competitive comparisons using the specific criteria of headline quality, construction, content and overall appeal. The judges were industry professionals representing the United States, Mexico, Canada, Europe and South Africa.

The brochures are a part of TBPA’s promotions to attract visitors to the Tunkhannock area and have been distributed to sites along Interstates 80 and 81, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and at visitors’ centers throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. The brochure features the natural beauty of the area, as well as promoting three major events in Tunkhannock: Christmas in Our Hometown, Tunkhannock Founders’ Day and Airing of the Quilts.

“We’ve been grinning all day,” said Rich Santee of TBPA. “We’ve been wanting to get Tunkhannock on the map, but we didn’t consider a map in Belgium. The credit goes to Cheryl Carnright of Carnright Design and to Ken Patton of Legal Blank Printery. They produced the final product. They are the talent.”

The promotional brochures were funded in part through a grant from the Wyoming County Room Tax Fund through the Endless Mountains Visitors’ Bureau. The Tunkhannock Business and Professional Association currently has 137 members from the greater Tunkhannock Area.

Going Green

Green Living in Laceyville & Surrounding Communities

At the next Laceyville Business Association meeting on October 14 at 5:30 at the Wiser Choice, a proposal is being presented concerning the possibility of Laceyville and surrounding areas becoming a "green" communities.

There will also be discussion about the Susquehanna River and using it as a resource to attract not only seasonal tourists but become a viable resource year round from different endeavors.

Doctor's Office Has Moved

I've been asked to let people know that the house on the corner with the Veteran's Memorial is no longer the doctor's office. Dr. Zurad is now located in Tunkhannock, PA. Google Map Directions.

Physican's Care is located right next to Lech's Pharmacy. Just go in the door as if you are going to Lech's Pharmacy and turn right into the doctor's office.

Gladys Place & Norma Robbins now live in the Old Doctor's Office which is now apartments for Senior Citizens. The upstairs apartment is available for any senior citizen that meets specific guidelines and can climb stairs.

We invite you to share your community interests whether it's to invite the community to an event, share your concerns about the community in general, give praise or express your dis-satisfaction with something, talk about your favorite book, whatever. This is a community talk section of the site open to the community residents and businesses.

The picture to the left is our monument honoring our war heroes from our community. It sits on the corner of the lot of the old Doctor's Office, which is now a home for retired seniors. The seniors currently residing there are Gladys Place & Norma Robbins who is wheel-chair bound. If you see either Gladys or Norma on the street, be sure to give them a big hello!

Our July Community Days was a big hit! The most popular was the Kiddie Tractor Pull. We had quite a lineup of youngsters ready to test out their toy tractors. It took awhile but as the day heated up, the water balloon tossing became a big hit! It allowed people to cool off in a big way. Later that night the dancing was lots of fun.

On the same day, the Oldest House had an open house for history buffs and Hidden Creek Winery had their annual Pig Roast & Fireworks. July turned out to be a huge area event with lots going on. It was hard to choose where to go first!

If you've been strolling down the street, have you noticed the new flags and signage? Eb's is sporting a brand new sign this year & the Laceyville Business Association has added red, white & blue flags attached to the lamp posts. Slowly but surely, we're making our street aesthetically pleasing.

Laceyville was extremely proud that the Sojourners camped along the banks of the Susquehanna and stayed long enough to give an interesting talk about the importance of the river and where the water originated from. Laceyville has long been a stop for canoing, kayaking, boating & fishing. We've created a peaceful area where people can camp as well as picnic or just sit and enjoy the river. The area gets a lot of activity and will get more in the future. There are plans in the making....talk to our Mayor Ken Patton about some of them.
